I’m already excited to see where it will go.I really love how Kate’s grown through this series. A seven book long plot arc about Kate confronting her father has been completed, which leaves Magic Shifts to establish a new arc, which I thought it did very well. Despite this, I felt like it had a bit of a slow start, and I didn’t get completely sucked in until the plot threads started coming together later on in the book. This book is sort of in an awkward place in the series. They quickly find that Eduardo’s disappearance seems to be related to a sudden influx of ghouls and other creatures steaming from Middle Eastern and Islamic mythology. As always, this installment in the series is packed with action and fight scenes with various monsters. Don’t read any further in this review if you don’t want to encounter them.Kate and Curran are still adjusting to life outside the Pack when George, Mahon’s daughter, comes to them, beseeching them to find her finance Eduardo, a werebuffalo working as a mercenary. You may want to consider skipping it and picking up the second book, Magic Burns instead. Also, I have to warn you that spoilers for earlier books, particularly Magic Breaks, are inevitable. If you’re interested in starting the series (a fun urban fantasy with great world building and a female lead), the first book is Magic Bites, although it’s also the weakest. Magic Shifts is the eighth book in the Kate Daniels series, so you definitely don’t want to be starting with it! You need to have read at least some of the prior books, especially Magic Breaks.

If you find the way to raise me up again, you will find the philosophical sulphur, that is, the Red Stone and Elixir of Life. If you find the way to slay me you will find the philosophical mercury of the wise, even the White Stone beloved of the Philosophers. I am the spirit of metals, the fire which does not burn, the water which does not wet the hands. I am the one thing necessary for the whole Opus. For I am the watery venomous serpent who lies buried at the earth’s centre I am the fiery dragon who flies through the air. But I give you fair warning that unless you seek the true philosophical gold and not the gold of the vulgar, unless you heart is fixed with unbending intent on the true Stone of the Philosophers, unless you are steadfast in your quest, abiding by God’s laws in all faith and humility and eschewing all vanity, conceit, falsehood, intemperance, pride, lust and faint-heartedness, read no farther lest I prove fatal to you. “Know this: I, Mercurius, have here set down a full, true and infallible account of the Great Work. I picked him out in book one as my comfort character in this series and I am way too invested in this man's well-being. What I was really here for, more than the plot twists, was the characters! Gosh darn it, I love all of these characters so much!!! I really wasn't kidding about rioting if anything happens to them. After a while, it kinda felt like SJM just wanted to introduce new things and didn't know how so she threw them into Danika's bag of secrets and called it a day.īut, whatever. Danika had a whole secret life, filled with so many secrets and people that Bryce never knew about. And honestly, it's because half the time most of those twists were coming entirely out of left field and it was all Danika's fault! I was getting second-hand embarrassment for Bryce every time something new was revealed about her supposed 'best friend'. While I did predict the outcome to several plot twists, like the identity of agent Daybright, there were a billion other twists that I didn't see coming, like that ending for which nothing could have prepared me for!!!!. Every time I thought I knew where the story was going, a whole other layer of complications and magic and worldbuilding was added to the mix. I can't even count the number of times I had to put it down and walk away for a minute because I was scared to read what happened next. I'll try to write a review but bear with me.įirst, let me just say that if anything happens to Ruhn and Hunt I am going to riot. With hands joined and heads bowed, their voices rose until the vibration could be heard and felt everywhere. In caves, basements, and open fields they had gathered midwives to the birth, some twenty thousand strong. It was the sound of voices human, yet not, growing in devout cacophony with the heightening potency of the star. For from the very bowels of the earth there came a distant sound. He feared he was alone with it, but in fact he was not. It grew brighter now and the constellations shuddered-or was it trembling hands on the eyepiece as the astronomer struggled to stifle his confused cry? From Capricorn, Cancer, and Leo pieces had suddenly flown, finding each other with magnetic certainty, melding into a pulsating galactic ember. A movement in the galaxies that should have taken eons occurred in the blinking of an eye.Īt the Cape Hattie observatory a young astronomer sat stunned, reaching an instant too late to activate the camera that might have recorded it: the splintering of three constellations that produced the dark, glowing star.
